Mucuna pruriens, commonly called velvet bean, is a food legume in the Fabaceae family and the main natural source of L-DOPA (3,4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine). Its beans are also high in protein and starch. In the body, L-DOPA is converted to dopamine by the enzyme aromatic amino acid decarboxylase.†
